DSE Assessment Process
Below is a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to the Itchen College DSE assessment process. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us at dse@itchen.ac.uk or speak with the college's dedicated DSE assessor.
Step 1: Recognising the Need for a DSE Assessment
-
Employees should request a DSE (Display Screen Equipment) assessment if they experience discomfort, health issues, or workstation-related concerns.
-
New employees will receive an assessment within 60 days of their employment start date and further information on this process will be covered during their IT induction.
-
Annual reminders will be sent to all staff regarding the DSE assessment process.
Step 2: Requesting a DSE Assessment
-
Submit a request by emailing dse@itchen.ac.uk or visiting the IT Support department based in S37
-
Provide details of any issues you are experiencing (e.g., discomfort, screen glare, incorrect chair height).
-
Confirm availability for scheduling the assessment.
Step 3: Scheduling the DSE Assessment
-
The DSE assessor will arrange a convenient time for the evaluation.
-
The assessment may be conducted in person or remotely, depending on the setup.
Step 4: Conducting the Assessment
-
The assessor will review the workstation setup, including:
- Desk and chair ergonomics
- Monitor height, distance, and positioning
- Keyboard and mouse placement
- Lighting and glare reduction
- Posture and movement habits -
Employees may be asked to demonstrate their usual working posture.
Step 5: Receiving Recommendations
-
The assessor will provide feedback and recommend adjustments to improve comfort and reduce risks.
-
Recommendations may include:
- Adjusting chair height or back support
- Raising or lowering the monitor
- Changing keyboard or mouse positioning
- Taking regular breaks and stretching exercises
- Additional equipment, such as a footrest or wrist support -
The assessor will ensure that your line manager is aware of the DSE assessment and will copy them into all correspondence unless you request this to be confidential. In this case you must state this when making the initial assessment request.
Step 6: Implementing Adjustments
-
Employees should follow the given recommendations and make necessary adjustments.
-
If additional equipment is required, they should submit a request through the appropriate department.
Step 7: Follow-Up and Review
-
Employees should monitor their comfort and productivity after making changes.
-
If issues persist, they can request a follow-up assessment.
-
DSE assessments should be reviewed periodically or if there are changes in workstation setup, equipment, or health concerns.
By following this process, employees can maintain a safe and comfortable workstation, reducing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders and other health issues related to prolonged screen use.
